Fall 2023 Plans

Our Fall session will run from Sept. 1 - Nov. 17, 2023. Our Friends & Family night is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 13 at 6pm. Sept. 1 through Nov. 10 will be regular class days (11 weeks) and Nov. 17 will be a special Field Day or Party to end the semester.

We are tentatively planning to offer the following classes in Fall 2023. The '?' will be filled by a second subject, which will be determined after registration closes and all the teachers are determined. One of those might be taught by you! What would you like to teach? The availability of the 13+ class will depend on sufficient students of this age enrolling and sufficient families enrolling overall so we will have enough teachers for all of these classes.

Ages 5-6y: K/1st Topics with a STEM Theme

Past Years

Over the past few years, we've taught a wide variety of classes. The specific classes vary from year to year, depending on our members families and what the parents want to teach. Students are grouped into classes by age/grade, and typically receive classes in 2 subjects over the course of the semester. Most classes are supplemental in nature, and not intended to provide a full course in a core subject. Students in older age groups may have homework assignments. Some of our past classes are briefly described below. This information is intended to give a general idea of what some of our classes are like, not a precise course listing.

Art

Students learned about perspective, drawing faces, shading, colors, and many other art techniques. Mediums used included pencil, watercolors, acrylics, charcoal, pastels, and more.

Music

In recorder classes, students studied basic music reading and theory while learning to play the recorder. They performed, solos, duets, and ensemble pieces at Parent Night and for the hospital tree lighting ceremony in December 2015.

Younger students in another music class were introduced to a wide variety of instruments and instrument families while learning about rhythm and pitch. Students were able to try some instruments, and played hand bells as a group.

A beginning piano class introduced students to the layout of a keyboard, beginning music reading, rhythm, and playing simple songs.

Spanish

Students learned beginning vocab and simple conversations in Spanish. Older students began studying Spanish grammar and did a report on a Spanish-speaking country. Students wrote and performed simple skits in Spanish at Parent Night.

French

Students learned beginning French vocabulary, such as numbers, colors, common objects, and parts of the body.

Science

Students in physical science classes have enjoyed learning through a wide variety of hands-on experiments and activities. These included building marble tracks in the hallway and sticking their hands in goo.

Math

Math class introduced students to a variety of topics that may not be included in a standard math curriculum, including computer math, codes and ciphers, set theory, and probability. Students had a chance to see that math can be fun!

Geography

Students learned to use pictures, stories, and other tricks to help identify and remember the locations and names of countries on a map. The first year covered the USA and South America, and the second year covered Africa. They created maps, colored national flags, and learned other interesting facts about these regions and countries.

Preschool and Early Grades

Our classes for our youngest students may include topics from science, history, geography, and math, alongside lots of reading, writing, and crafts.

Creative Writing

Students explored different types of writing such as poetry, short stories, and journaling. They also learned about techniques for improving their writing.

Another Creative Writing class studied the elements of a good story and how to design a plot.

Sign Language

Students in Sign Language class learned words in sign and also learned signs to accompany several songs.
